In an interview with Switzerland Global Enterprise, Aldo Cina, Regional Head of Aequor Consulting GmbH, comments on the crucial factors that convinced the company to locate in Basel.
Your company provides IT services to fortune 500 customers in a broad spectrum of industries all over the world. When you decided to expand your offerings in Europe, you opted for Basel as local base. What set Basel apart from other European cities?
Basel has one of the highest densities of life sciences companies in Europe, with global heavyweights like Roche, Syngenta, Lonza or Novartis in town. This thriving life sciences cluster was a big incentive for Aequor to choose Basel.
In addition, Basel has a top-notch infrastructure in place with the Euro Airport and an incredible network of trains, allowing for convenient travel across Europe. It is also easy to travel to Basel from other continents.
The move to Basel was perfect in every way… from the beauty of the region to its diversity and thriving economic environment as well as the political stability of Switzerland. All these positive factors made our decision an easy one.
We found Basel to be a great choice as it is a true life sciences hub and offers a high-quality talent pool.
What does Switzerland have to offer to a company like yours?
Switzerland is a place that attracts big companies and motivates them to set up their headquarters here. It provides start-ups with all the support and coaching needed. Excellent schools and educational possibilities generate amazing talents and profiles. Top players (not only in the pharmaceutical environment) are located in Switzerland.
In addition, we realized that there is a good network of organizations and institutions with a vision to strengthen the country’s position as a digital hub. Events sponsored by Switzerland Global Enterprise (S-GE) and BaselArea.swiss are highly appreciated in the community and support this reality.
How did you experience the process of locating in Switzerland?
The process of creating our European base in Basel was very smooth and exciting. We received a lot of help and support from S-GE, the Swiss Business Hub USA as well as the cantons in Switzerland.
We first contacted S-GE in Switzerland, which turned out to be a great blessing. They were extremely responsive and supportive of our efforts and needs. Not only did S-GE provide copious information and answers to all our questions, they also connected us with several outstanding organizations and people that were ready and capable of offering the kind of help and services we needed. S-GE was well-prepared and operated with speed and quality.
When we first visited S-GE in Zurich, our executive team was welcomed by several officials from various cantons and executives from accounting and law firms who were very willing and excited to provide us with all necessary data and details required to make informed decisions. We were quite surprised and very happy to see the level of participation from all these organizations without much hesitation and expectation.
With the support of BaselArea.swiss we also gained a good understanding of the local Basel jurisdiction. We received a warm welcome and received great support of local authorities. Even three years later, we still receive excellent support.
What do you appreciate about doing business in Switzerland?
Switzerland is state-of-the-art with regard to IT know-how and local resources. The people of Basel are also familiar with different cultures. Many are multilingual, making it easy to communicate globally within organizations and with clients
Where do you stand today? Are there any challenges still to tackle?
Switzerland is a small place to share with other competitors but Aequor is gaining more and more recognition in the Swiss IT market. We have gained new contacts and customers and are growing consequently. This confirms that we are moving in the right direction.
