With over 320,000 employees, the Swiss mechanical, electrical and metal industry (MEM) is the largest industrial employer in Switzerland. Due to the high standards in terms of quality, precision, safety and reliability, the sector remains internationally competitive despite the strong Swiss franc. Almost 80% of products are exported, almost 60% of which go into the EU. Globally, Switzerland therefore occupies second place for exporting of machines per capita. One of the reasons for the success of this industry is the above-average high capacity for innovation: the companies are accustomed to having their products, technology and processes being continuously improved via means of significant investments in research and development. As part of the mandate Export Promotion and on behalf of the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs SECO, Switzerland Global Enterprise (S-GE) is supporting internationally-oriented Swiss SMEs from the MEM industry and other industries in their internationalization projects. S-GE therefore works closely with Swiss industry associations. As part of the mandate Investment Promotion and on behalf of SECO and the cantons, S-GE coordinates activities in all areas that are active in promoting Switzerland as a business location for establishing companies with great strength in innovation and value creation. In this way, S-GE is making a valuable contribution to the MEM location in Switzerland.
